Volunteering at the SJC

Volunteers and interns are essential to the Social Justice Committee’s work. Volunteers offer their skills and dedication in exchange for the opportunity to learn about rights issues in developing areas, to work as part of an energetic team of staff and volunteers and to contribute to the struggle for a more just world.

Volunteer FAQ

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Volunteers contribute to all aspects of our human rights public education work. Volunteers working on the Upstream Journal can expect to do research for articles, conduct interviews, choose photos to accompany articles and help with distribution of the journal. Other responsibilities in the office include: conducting research and helping to write Action Alerts, helping with promotion and outreach for public talks and conferences, researching funding sources and working on the SJC’s website.

What experience is required?

No experience is required. The quality we look for in volunteers is an interest in human rights, international development, or public education.

What is the minimum volunteer commitment?

We request that volunteers commit to working a minimum of 4 hours per week for 4 months.

Do I have to speak French or English?

We do not require that volunteers be bilingual. However, volunteers who can speak French or Spanish are always needed to assist with oral and written translation.

What is the procedure for becoming a volunteer?

Potential volunteers should contact the SJC by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please include a CV and a brief description of your previous work or volunteer experience related to human rights. The education coordinator will review your information and contact you for an interview at the SJC office to discuss volunteer opportunities. The interview is informal and gives the volunteer a chance to ask questions about the SJC’s work.

What training and supervision is provided?

Volunteers work closely with staff and receive one-on-one training and support throughout their time at the SJC.

Can I get a reference letter?

We are happy to provide reference letters for volunteers and interns who have invested significant time and energy in the SJC’s work.  Reference letters are usually not written for volunteers who are involved with us for less than four months.

How can I get more information on the SJC’s programs?

For more information about the SJC’s work, please read the What We Do section of the website. Feel free to contact us via phone or e-mail for more information.

Where would I be volunteering?

The SJC’s office is located at 1857 de Maisonneuve ouest, Suite 320 (Metro Guy-Concordia).
