FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Serving up a taste of inequality: the Theatre for Social Justice kicks off its new dinner theatre season with performances of the “Dictatorship of Debt”.
Set in the smoky, sexy atmosphere of a 1930’s cabaret, this feverishly fun comic drama explores the roots of Third World debt and shows how the world economy works against most of the world’s people. With the World Bank and IMF personified by jazzy cabaret performers, the audience can expect an evening of dinner, music, and dancing. But be warned, the inequalities portrayed in the performance may spill over onto your dinner plate!
The dinner theatre is part of the Social Justice Committee’s campaign for the cancellation of Third World debt. Since its inception in 1996, the theatre troupe has taken an innovative approach to popular education, striving to make complex issues of debt and trade accessible to all. The completely volunteer driven ensemble has evolved from humble beginnings in city parks, and they are now heading for the big time with shows on Sunday, March 18 at 3473 University St. (the Diocesan College, metro McGill) and Sala Rossa on April 16.
The Social Justice Committee is a Montreal based NGO that works for global economic justice. Some recent successes in debt cancellation have led to the SJC’s new “Scrap the SAPs” campaign. This campaign calls for a re-evaluation of harmful structural adjustment programs and conditionality agreements imposed on impoverished countries by the international financial institutions.
Tickets are $7 for students $10 adults. Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts at 7pm. For more information, call the Social Justice Committee at 514 933-6797 or visit their website at http://www.s-j-c.net/English/events/events.html.
