Coordinator of public education programsThe Social Justice Committee is seeking a full-time coordinator for its public education programs. The Education coordinator will be responsible for managing, promoting and ensuring the effectiveness of the SJC's human rights public education programs. The Education coordinator will work with the supervision of the organization's Executive Director. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take part in shaping the future of the SJC, and will be an integral part of the core staff unit that guides the organization's programs.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with other staff, volunteers and Board of Directors of the SJC, the Education coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing the SJC's program of public education, within the framework of the organization's purposes. The person will coordinate volunteer sub-committees, which currently include a Central America Working group, a Debt Action Working group, and a theatre group, and will help maintain and develop local and international contacts. The person will also identify and pursue sources of funding for our education programs.
Summary of job responsibilities
1. Education and outreach
▪ Implement SJC education programs
▪ Organize and promote public education activities
▪ Conduct workshops and public presentations
▪ Assist in developing new public education materials
▪ Recruit and screen volunteers for educational projects
▪ Coordinate volunteer sub-committees and manage volunteer teams working on educational programs
▪ Manage internships as they pertain to educational programs, including working with universities to find candidates, and selecting and supervising interns
▪ Represent the SJC in communication with associations, networks, government agencies, etc.
▪ Coordinate travel and organize visits by guest speakers from overseas
▪ Research sources of funding and write project funding proposals for educational projects
▪ Coordinate fundraising activities as needed to support educational projects
▪ Correspond with collaborators/donors for educational projects
2. General Office Management
The Education coordinator will also support the work of the Executive Director in the day-to-day operations of the SJC, including the following general office management tasks:
▪ Manage project budgets
▪ Draft correspondence
▪ Maintain office records
▪ Arrange meetings, conferences
▪ Contribute to the SJC Annual Report
Qualifications▪ Organized, self-managed, motivated, highly focused and results oriented, and adaptable.
▪ Strong oral and written communication skills
▪ Fluency in written and spoken English and French; capacity to communicate in Spanish an asset
▪ Ability and willingness to work flexible schedule hours, including occasional week-end and evening workshops and meetings
▪ Computer skills (knowledge of programs such as database, spreadsheet, graphics/design, layout)
▪ A commitment to social justice and the SJC's mission
▪ Experience and ability in popular education or small-group animation
▪ Knowledge of current issues regarding human rights and social and economic justice
▪ Ability to work within a consensus model in a small staff team, at ease and confident in larger meetings, and self disciplined in organizing and completing work.Salary and benefits
Salary for 32 hours/week is $30,000/year. Matching Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution. Vacation time and personal time off, plus Christmas/ New Year period holiday. Possibility of international travel.
The Education coordinator will work in the SJC office. This is a one-year position, with possibility of renewal. Performance evaluation after initial 3 months and six months, thence annually.
