Vivien and Caroline at protest
The Social Justice Committee (SJC) held a protest in downtown Montreal on Thursday June 8th, 2006, the closing day of the International Economic Forum of the Americas/ Conference of Montreal. The demonstration was part of the SJC's on-going campaign for debt cancellation for impoverished nations.
Demonstrators gathered outside the conference in an effort to gain media attention and raise public awareness surrounding the crippling debt faced by a number of Latin American and Caribbean nations.
The SJC delivered a letter to Mr. Luis Alberto Moreno, the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), who was speaking at the conference that afternoon. The letter, co-signed by a number of NGOs and civil society groups, requested that the IDB provide full and immediate debt cancellation for Highly-Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Nicaragua, Honduras, Bolivia and Guyana, as well as debt relief for severely indebted nations Haiti and Ecuador should they request it.
