Salvadoran Communities Oppose Canadian Gold Mining Company
We invite you to support the people of El Salvador who oppose the activities of Au Martinique Silver Inc. by joining us in an international letter writing campaign.
The citizens of Chalatenango, located in northern El Salvador, strongly reject a mining project brought forward by Au Martinique Silver, Inc. In an attempt to halt the exploration activities of this Canadian based company, they have been responding with hunger strikes and public protests.
" For nearly a year, people have been organizing to defend their lands against the incursions of Au Martinique Silver, Inc. Through marches, public meetings, and community action, thousands of people have shown that they do not believe cyanide-based gold mining is a sustainable development option for their region", says a resident of Chalentango.
Opposition to mining in El Salvador is now widespread: the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), the National Commission on Development (CND), the Catholic Conference of Bishops, and regional mayors' have all voiced their objections in the national media.
Please add your voice to this opposition. Send a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Au Martinique Silver calling upon him to listen to the voice of the people and halt its mining activities. Mention the people's concern over the destruction of their natural environment and their right to determine their own development. Send a copy of your letter to the Canadian government.
